Manuel Boix

Last week I went to Manuel’s Boix home because I had to give them the CD that is included in my book. He is undoubtedly one of the most representative of the Valencian painting movement born in 60′, together with R. Armengol or A. Heras, and I enjoyed an interesting conversation with him.

Now, I would like to show you something about his work.

Rostre que comença, Manuel Boix (2000)
(Starting face)

(Face starting to be disfigured)

(Sketch for a portrait in a scramble)

That three paintings are part of the series “El rostre” (The face). That it’s about the same painting creation process and the relevance that faces have in the pictorial art. In this series, the paint as subject are the axis of the works, but paint isn’t applied over the canvas as it may seem. The work that Boix does with the contrasts and light reflex creates that realist effect, that is achieved applying transparent watery oil over the painting.

Personaly this is my favourite series of him, you can see more as the next picture in his web: ManuelBoix.com

(The innumerable seen of Narcissus)

In L’Alcúdia (Valencia, “Spain”), we can find, on the Casa de la Cultura, a dome that have impressive frescoes that he did during the years 2002 and 2003, commemorating the 750 anniversary of the town. “La cúpula de la Ribera” (The dome of La Ribera), as is titled it, have as central subject the artist profession as the escence of the composition, as he said last week during a guided visit to the exposure “Obra gràfica i impresa – Manuel Boix” (Graphic and printed work – Manuel Boix), in reference to that series before said.

Other artistic discipline Manuel Boix has developed is sculpture. He has important sculptures on bustling streets of Valencia, as the sculptures about “Pilota a mà”, that are in front of Bancaixa building and are made with bronze.

This sculpture and also the next one are included into the series “El punt dins el moviment” (The point into the movement), that have as central subject the Valencian traditional game “Pilota a mà”, that combines bronze and marble figures.

About sculpture we can talk about another series he did to illustrate the book “Terra en la boca” (Sand into the mouth), by Joan Fuster.
